Most people focus on facial care to achieve or maintain a youthful appearance. It is one reason that the effects of aging may be more visible in the hands and the décolletage (chest) area. Because the skin on the hands is thinner and they are subjected to more constant and often harsher elements (such as the sun while driving, washing multiple times during the day, and constant motion), they often age faster than other parts of the body. The result is often veiny, wrinkled or sun-damaged hands that can make you look (prematurely) older.

Just as the other parts of the body, the hands and chest lose volume from fat loss, and thinning of the skin. In the hands, the vessels and tendons become more apparent, and in the décolletage, wrinkles form in the cleavage area. This is something Dr. Kaado can address with our hand rejuvenation in Virginia Beach.

Fortunately, there are now a number of very successful treatments to remedy the most common problems, such as:

  • Prominent veins and tendons, due to loss of volume.
  • Thin, wrinkled skin.
  • Age spots.
  • Poor skin tone and/or color.

Injectable Dermal Fillers

There are three different types of fillers that can be used to rejuvenate the hands and chest due to loss of volume:

  • Calcium hydroxylapatite, such as Radiesse (filler of choice for the hands for Dr. Kaado) You’ll have minor swelling for a day or two and then you’ll have hands that definitely look younger. Expect results to last a year – in some cases longer.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid fillers, such as Sculptra (filler of choice for the chest for Dr. Kaado) 2-3 sessions, lasting 2 or more years of improvement

Each dermal filler has its own properties and works in its own, unique way. However, the principles and procedures are the same: The filler is injected in multiple locations on the backs of the hands, and in layers at various levels. This reshapes and augments the skin on the hands.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy takes a different approach. A specific type of medicine, called a “sclerosant,” is injected into the veins, rather than the skin. Over time, it causes the blood vessels to shrink, reducing their visibility. Sclerotherapy is often used as a treatment for varicose or spider veins. Typically used for medium-sized blood vessels, the treatment is virtually painless and there is little, if any downtime.

Laser Treatment

A hand-held laser device is passed over the skin. As the blood absorbs the light, the vessels coagulate and are absorbed by the body. Typically used for small to medium-sized blood vessels, there is little downtime.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel will remove the upper layer(s) of the skin, causing a regeneration of new, smooth skin with generally good pigmentation.

Using a sponge or swab, a chemical solution is applied to the backs of the hands. By carefully monitoring the changes, Dr. Kaado determines when to neutralize or remove the chemical. Virtually no aftercare is required.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Fractional Laser: As with any laser treatment, your eyes will be covered to protect them from the laser light. A wand is passed over the backs of the hands or the chest . This resurfacing laser device emits a series of very short pulses of high-intensity light that damages the skin, one layer at a time. Simultaneously, the laser heats the underlying skin, which stimulates the growth of new collagen, so smoother, firmer skin emerges as the treated area heals.

For most patients, it will feel like a mild sunburn, with some redness, swelling and possibly itching or stinging. If severe, in five to seven days the skin will become dry and peel.

CO2 Laser treatments rejuvenate skin by creating small injuries in the dermis which lead to the body tightening the overlying skin, laying down collagen, and thickening the skin. IPL laser to treat pigmentation spots will darken and then flake off over 2-3 weeks. Contact us today to learn more and schedule a free consultation.

Other Types of Treatments

The Virginia Beach hand rejuvenation treatments discussed are all non-invasive and, in a majority of cases, will produce the sought-after improvements. There are, however, also two surgical options for hand rejuvenation:

Skincare

With the right choices and the right skin care products, you can easily enjoy youthful hands that are supple, smooth and firm … no matter your age. Sunscreen, Retin A or retinol for the chest, growth factors like TNS Essential Serum (for the chest), or with body skincare products such as Environ which exfoliates and hydrates.
